STRANGE RESORT: Deep Dive Into Derry -- Stephen King History
#stephenking #welcometoderry
Welcome back to STRANGE RESORT... the Stephen King podcast that lurks in the shadows of otherwise sunny vacation destinations...
Tonight, we are taking a trip into a town called DERRY, MAINE... made famous (or perhaps we should say "infamous") thanks to a diabolical clown-entity often known as PENNYWISE the Dancing Clown... but a more appropriate name might simply be IT... as in Stephen King's IT...
But of course, our fearless podcaster George Hatfield knows none of these things yet... He is just beginning to dig into the deep, dark history of the Town of Derry... beginning as far back as possible, onto prehistoric times, even... and then into Derry's lumber mill days... and then onto some of the scariest events in Derry's first two centuries, leading up to the Kitchener Ironworks explosion!
We had a lot of fun making this podcast that delves into the fictional world of Stephen King... and we hope you enjoy watching and listening to this video, and the rest of the library at the Stephen King Book Club here on UA-cam :)

Stephen King's THE STAND: Horror History of the Super-Flu
How could this creature not have been discovered before this? Unless it is a new lifeform that was new to Cascade Lake, even it was stated it was an open lake to swim in and only closed in fall and winter. Also the remaining 3 should have dived while the first cutie was getting eaten and they would have made it. Other than these two things it is one of the most memorable and best S,K short story by far
Hubert Marsten = Epstein😝
Am I the only one who dug the “choose your own adventure” format of Crouch End? It must take forever to write and produce the alternate scenarios and outcomes, but do you think you might do another short story in that style?
Great stuff, thank you. 😊
Didn't find all the eggs huh? Well great. At least one of Pennywise's children survived.
Don’t stutter and slashing a teacher’s car tyres is probably not the best idea! 😱😱😱
So, Derry stories eh? Nice.
Being from Bangor, ME, it's interesting to listen and watch this, hearing words and names that are just a part of my everyday life, sound fantastical in these stories.
Room 316 GIVE ME A HELL YEAH!!!
“Oh George if were only about the Easter eggs”
I really like this format if I have already read the story. I have always really liked your use of stills for your story telling. Today's characters look like De Niro and DeCaprio, which makes me wonder again...where you get your art. It is always very good and appears original. It always suits the story very well. Also, when the next part of "The Long Walk" going to release? I think that is my absolute favorite of yours so far....
Are you going to finish the long walk or am I just not finding the 2nd half of the story??? Love your stuff.
A psychic body swap is definitely ESP powers
Oh yeah, I can see that... I placed it in the "spirit" category, but maybe ESP is the way to go in this case.
Im not sure what I've stumbled upon here but, I'm pretty sure its a gold mine.
I'm glad you found us... It's a fun place... we all float down here.
Ahh Derry, I love Derry!... LONDON Derry right? Those girls would fight the damn clown
The worst thing Stephen King has ever done was call the town in IT Derry. I'm from Derry in Ireland and now everything is saturated with the fake derry
Oh no! Is it saturated visually? I mean, are there pictures of Pennywise in shop windows and such?
@@stephenkingbookclub1054 nah its more online. Like i i want a poster of my home town i have to sift through 10x as many posters of Derry, Maine and stuff like that. Its mostly inconvenient but i do miss the days before IT was revived ahaha
(Man you really triggered this paused need/dream I have/d of a person who's going over Kings work in universe, but she's obvi wrong? Like an obvious red herring? Her name could even be a reference to that. Like scarlet fisher. Also, the eggs? Fully believe tak is one of them. Also ardelia lortz. And the outsider/ondowskithing. It's different parts of a life cycle that makes them slightly different, like a tick. When smaller they can travel to find a good juicy spot, then they're tak, then they're Bob grey.)
What is the actual name of the penny candy?
bloodbath and bodyworks Cute
Growing up in Florida next to a lake, my parents had a floating dock that ended with a pontoon, very similar to the raft. I had recurring nightmares into adulthood that I’d be on the pontoon when it disconnected and floated away, surrounded by hundreds of alligators, and no way to get back.
Yikes!
Hey, George I really enjoy your work! I listen to it while I'm driving my old semi around the country. Whelp it's about four past midnight for me right now and while I'm waiting at this truck stop parking lot for that hitchhiking "gunslinger", his adopted kid and their weird exotic pet to get back from the bathroom, I got this weird story I heard from an old buddy of mine to tell you about, now I don't remember most of the details he said since it was years ago but the important bits I do remember was something about a full airliner on an overnight flight went through an unusually southern aurora borealis and apparently when it landed the next morning almost all the passengers and crew were gone... I can see those three coming back my way. I do have a question though George... Have you ever heard of an animal called 'billy bumbler' before?
We will definitely have George look into that mysterious flight you mentioned... As far as the billybumbler and his companions, they sound like good people... and those are the sorts come with the worst kind of trouble! Long days and pleasant nights!
@@stephenkingbookclub1054 same to you!
Yes please
Alright , i'm just going to out and say it. Stephen King has a lot of great stories. But nothing compares even remotely to this one (It). I mean, you're entitled to your opinion even if it's wrong, ha.😂
Did anyone catch that the numbers in Castle Rock’s crime statistic total 19? Whenever numbers come up where Stephen King is concerned, I have to check!
Poor big Bill didn't get all the IT spiders eggs! I figured that when I read of the "Pennywise lives" graffiti in Dreamcatcher. Imagine if it was just one, and junior is now strong enough to act...
It was Ben that was using the matches to stomp out the eggs, but yea I figured that out too
this story is way more intense when presented this way.
Did anyone else notice that the mysterious clown figure in the lynch mob didn’t have any legs??
Hmm... you might say... he floats!
Great!! I loved it!
wonderful episode! Be safe! Derry has a lot of history!
Okay...I actually WORK at a Bath & Body Works, and I cannot WAIT to go in and tell my boss about this. I also REALLY want to draw chalk outlines of bodies near the Wallflowers display (5 for $27!) and answer the phone, "Thank you for calling Bloodbath and Body Works!" I might get fired, though, especially since our DM is coming this week. Unless she's a Stephen King fan, in which case I might end up General Manager of my store.
Do it! It will make everybody's life more interesting, at least! 😉
Oh my gosh, that's funny. I hope your boss gets a kick out of this...
When Jake Epping was in Derry in 1958 and experienced its town vibe, he concluded that it was “just Derry being Derry”.
You’ll float George they all float
I've read all of Kings books up till 2000..I collected all till then..then I just stopped and sold them all..I need to get back to reading his work.. I've always loved his writing talent
I paused back in the 90s... then fell in love all over again after a ten year break...
OH!!!!! I can not be more grateful for your mention of Recorded Live!!!! When it would come on HBO between movies I was always mesmerized!! Until your video I could never remember the name. This is great. Thank you. And The Raft rocks as well. Good Stuff. I am now a subscriber.
You can watch "Recorded Live" on UA-cam now -- and relive the nightmare, LOL!
Excellent!! Do you remember another short about kids in grade school who lived on a planet where it always rained and then every so often, just for the briefest time the sun would come out... It was a huge event and all of the class was awaiting the big solar show... a boy in the class bullied a female classmate into a closet and locked her in... no one knew she was inside and she missed the Sun... only seeing it under the door space...
@@yetisburgeadress YES! That is based on a short story by Ray Bradbury: "All Summer in a Day." Heartbreaking!
Looks a lot like Port Hope, Ontario.
It really, really does. And a friend of mine who grew up in Port Hope *does* have a lot of strange stories about the place... But I've got a lot of strange stories about Essex County, On. too. Small towns are just strange under that wholesome surface, and that's why Derry *works.*
Great video! Derry would be a great place to live except for the alien gods, cryptic monsters, and constant vampires.
But other than that, it's splendid!
Id live there. Heavenly with a side of scary
Run, Georgie, run.
I DID NOT KNOW 😮 that Stephen King wrote Creepshow 😱😱😱
Oh yeah, it's his love letter to horror comics of the 1950s...
This is so darn good
Thank you. That's very high praise coming from David Lynch!
Oh I remember the licorice flavored babies, really funny, odd no one thought anything of it then really so awful.
Right?!
The content on this channel is SO unique! Love King, and you give such an interesting perspective on his stories! Respect fellow Constant Reader. 🎈
I appreciate that so much... One of the things I love about his books is that while you're reading them, you feel like you're in the world of Stephen King, so I've tried to make some of my videos rekindle that feeling.
It's in a virus' best interest to mutate to a point that it is no longer deadly. If everyone is dead the virus cannot spread anymore.
So funny because Derry Maine is just up the road from my house. It was a town at one time but was absorbed into another, Milo.
Wasn't George Hatfield the student who slashed Jack Torrence's tires in The Shining?
That is absolutely correct... and have I got a video for you! ua-cam.com/video/-NhAvumFrVY/v-deo.htmlsi=L296sBpXujVXusOY
We all know it's not about the Easter eggs...
I started reading Stephen King at the age of 11 years old. Fun fact, I had no idea that it was even him when I fell in love with the book "Roadwork"-Richard Bachman. When I finished that book, I was left with a longing for more. I went to the local library, as we had no internet back then (1990). The librarian informed me that Richard was, in fact, Stephen King, and there were dozens of books available. I started right away with "Four Past Midnight". From that point, I read every single SK book my library had. I attribute my success in school to my interest in reading his works. My absolute favorite has been the Dark Tower series, though. He is truly a magically gifted storyteller. I'm so happy to have found this channel with other fans. 😊
Sounds like you've come to the right place. Welcome to the book club... and I think it's so amazing that you discovered him through a rather obscure Richard Bachman book! I think King would be thrilled by that!
